What to Order at Shake Shack: Every Item, Judged
Shake Shack sells a very good burger and a lot of things standing near it. The burger is the reason the line exists: freshly ground Angus, smashed and seared on a flat-top, on a Martin's potato roll that most chefs would pick for themselves. Everything in the fryer is a different story.
The pricing is the trap. A ShackBurger looks cheap at $6.29 until you add the fries and the drink and walk out at fourteen dollars, and the menu is arranged so the add-ons carry the margin. Prices below are national averages as of May 2026 and they swing hard — a Manhattan flagship, an airport terminal or a stadium Shack can run $2 over every number here. Calories come from Shake Shack's own published nutrition tables.
Every item, judgedThe verdicts
Double ShackBurger
Order itThe only item here that scales honestly. A single is $6.29 for 530 calories; the double is $2.70 more for a second seared patty, and since the bun, sauce, lettuce and tomato are already paid for, you're buying pure beef at the margin. Single ShackBurgers are the number-one complaint about portion size at this chain. This is the fix, and it costs less than adding fries.
ShackBurger
Order itNothing here is worth ordering ahead of it, at any price. The patty gets pressed onto the flat-top so the crust forms properly, and ShackSauce is doing more work than people admit — it's essentially a spiced Thousand Island, and it's why a plain Hamburger tastes like a mistake. The tomato is the weak link. Ask them to leave it off in winter.
Shack-cago Dog
Order itShake Shack began as a hot dog cart and almost nobody orders the hot dogs anymore. Natural casing, so it snaps. Relish, sport pepper, cucumber, celery salt — the full Chicago dressing, for twenty cents more than the naked version. Five dollars and 380 calories, and you leave satisfied.
'Shroom Burger
Order itA portobello cap stuffed with muenster and cheddar, breaded and fried until the cheese inside turns liquid. It is the rare vegetarian fast-food item that vegetarians aren't settling for. Nine dollars is steep for a mushroom and you should order it anyway — cut it open at the table and you'll understand the price. Eat it fast or the cheese sets.
Vanilla Custard Cup
Order itFrozen custard has more egg yolk and less whipped-in air than ice cream, which is the entire reason this chain has a dessert reputation. The cup is the same custard as the $5.99 shake before they thin it with milk. Two dollars cheaper, 400 fewer calories, and the texture is the point.
SmokeShack
DecentThe chopped cherry peppers are excellent and the bacon is not. Shake Shack's bacon is pre-cooked and reheated, and the word that comes up over and over in complaints about it is 'flimsy.' At $8.49 you're paying $2.20 over a ShackBurger for peppers and a disappointment. Order a ShackBurger and ask for cherry peppers instead.
Chick'n Shack
DecentCompetent fried chicken on a good bun with buttermilk herb mayo and real pickles. Nothing wrong with it. It's also $8.49 at a place whose entire reputation is beef, and the Spicy version at $8.99 has more going on for fifty cents. If you're at Shake Shack ordering chicken, you probably had a reason, and this won't ruin the trip.
Crinkle Cut Fries
DecentThe most argued-about item Shake Shack sells. They're frozen and crinkle-cut for surface area, and straight out of the fryer, eaten in the first three minutes, they're properly crisp and salty. At their worst, which covers most delivery orders and plenty of dine-in ones, they go limp and taste like the freezer aisle. One Reddit thread called them the worst in the industry; that's unfair, but nothing else here falls this far from the burger.
Black & White Shake
DecentVanilla custard with fudge swirled through it, hand-spun rather than pulled from a machine, and it's thick. It's also 770 calories and six dollars for a drink you'll finish before the burger arrives. Worth it once. Not worth it alongside fries.
Shack Stack
Skip itA cheeseburger with the fried 'Shroom Burger sitting on top of it. Eight hundred calories, $9.59, and the two halves fight each other — the mushroom's melted cheese drowns the beef crust you paid for. Buy a Double ShackBurger for sixty cents less, or buy the 'Shroom on its own. Stacking them is a menu-engineering exercise, not a recipe.
Hamburger
Skip itSixty cents less than a ShackBurger and missing the cheese that makes a ShackBurger work. Reddit's verdict on the plain one, 'average and salty,' is about right. There is no version of this menu where saving sixty cents is the smart move.
Cheese Fries
Skip itA dollar to pour cheese sauce over fries that were already the problem, and 710 calories later it's a spoon situation.
Bacon Cheese Fries
Skip itThe worst-value item Shake Shack sells. Almost six dollars, 840 calories, and the bacon on top is the same pre-cooked strip people complain about on the SmokeShack, now steaming under cheese sauce. That's more calories than a Double ShackBurger, for a side.
Frequently askedFAQ
What is the best thing to order at Shake Shack?
The Double ShackBurger, $8.99 and 790 calories. The single at $6.29 is excellent but small enough that portion size is the chain's most common complaint, and the second patty costs only $2.70 because you've already paid for the bun, the sauce and the produce. If you want the cheapest good order instead, the Shack-cago Dog is $4.99.
Are Shake Shack fries actually bad?
They're inconsistent, not bad. They come in frozen and crinkle-cut, and in the first few minutes out of the fryer they're crisp and well-salted. The problem is how fast they fall off — by the time a delivery order arrives or a stadium line clears, they've gone limp, which is where the 'worst fries in fast food' reputation comes from. Order them last, eat them first, and don't add the cheese sauce.
Why is Shake Shack so expensive?
Ingredient cost and real estate. The beef is all-natural Angus ground fresh and never frozen, the buns come from Martin's, and most Shacks sit in high-rent urban locations without drive-throughs. The bigger factor for your bill is that Shake Shack has no combo pricing — a burger, fries and a drink is three full-price items, roughly $13 to $14, versus a bundled meal anywhere else. Prices also jump sharply at airports, stadiums and Manhattan flagships.
