What to Order at Denny's: Every Item, Judged
Denny's has been open all night since 1953 and has never once pretended the food is the reason you came. That honesty is the appeal. Nobody walks in at 2 a.m. expecting a revelation; they expect eggs, a booth, and a check under twenty dollars. The chain mostly delivers on that, and the places it fails are specific and avoidable.
The number that should govern your order here isn't calories. It's sodium. The Lumberjack Slam carries 4,110mg — nearly two days' worth in a single plate, and the highest figure this site has recorded at any chain. A bowl of chicken noodle soup, the thing you order when you feel unwell, contains 3,880mg. Meanwhile the Fit Slam comes in at 860mg for a full breakfast. The spread inside one menu is enormous, and the menu board tells you none of it.
Sourcing, because prices here are slippery. Roughly 95% of Denny's locations are independently franchised and set their own prices, so every figure below is a national range rather than a receipt — expect the low end in the rural Midwest and the high end in coastal cities. Calories come from Denny's own published nutrition guide. Where a plate is listed without eggs or a side, the take says so, because a scrambled-egg add-on is another 220 calories nobody counts.
Every item, judgedThe verdicts
Slamburger™
Order itBeef patty, American cheese, a fried egg, bacon, and hash browns inside a brioche bun. It sounds like a stunt and eats like the one dish someone in the kitchen actually cares about: the yolk does the work a sauce would, the hash browns give it crunch, and the whole thing carries 52g of protein. Get the onion rings with it, not the fries.
Country-Fried Steak & Eggs
Order itThe gravy is the argument. Most chain country gravy leans hard on salt; this one is milder and peppery, which is why reviewers keep ranking the plate near the top. The steak itself is roughly half breading, so go in expecting a crunchy edge and a tender middle rather than beef. At 1,850mg of sodium it's also, improbably, one of the more restrained full breakfasts here.
Fit Slam®
Order itEgg whites with spinach and tomato, turkey bacon, an English muffin, and fruit. At 860mg of sodium, it carries a quarter of what the Lumberjack does to you and 27g of protein before you add anything. It is the least you can spend and leave Denny's without a nap scheduled.
Build Your Own Grand Slam®
Order itPick four: pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, biscuit, fruit. Under nine dollars for a plate you assembled is the best pure value on any menu this site has covered, and the reason people still defend this chain. What you pay for it is 2,300mg of sodium, most of it in the pancakes — a two-stack alone carries 1,390mg. Swap one pancake slot for seasonal fruit and you cut that nearly in half.
Wild Alaska Salmon
Order itNobody orders fish at Denny's. The numbers say they should: 37g of protein, 1,300mg of sodium, the lowest of anything on the dinner page. Grilled, garlic-and-herb, two sides. It is not going to move you, but it's the only entrée here that leaves you able to drive home without regret.
The Super Bird®
DecentTurkey, Swiss, bacon and tomato on grilled sourdough — the lightest sandwich on the menu by 140 calories and the one first-timers walk past. It's a competent diner melt, nothing more, and the sourdough arrives buttery enough to require napkins. Fine. The Pot Roast Melt costs two dollars more and hands you 59g of protein. Take that trade when you've come in hungry.
Cinnamon Roll Pancake Slam®
DecentThese are legitimately good. Cinnamon crumble baked into the batter, cream cheese icing on top, and testers keep comparing them to Cinnabon rather than to pancakes. Then you read the panel: 145 grams of sugar in two pancakes, which is roughly three cans of Coke. Get them for the table, split them four ways, and order something with eggs in it as your actual breakfast.
Pot Roast Melt
DecentSlow-cooked pot roast, American cheese, mushrooms and caramelized onions on seven-grain. 59g of protein and 1,630mg of sodium, both respectable for a melt. It suffers the same fate as every handheld here: the bread arrives soaked in butter, and by the last quarter the sandwich has surrendered.
Moons Over My Hammy®
Skip itDenny's most famous item is three slices of deli ham that don't reach the edges of the bread. Testers keep arriving at the same verdict — with the ham that thin, you've bought a grilled cheese with scrambled eggs in it for eleven dollars. Add 2,570mg of sodium and the fact that the Grand Slamwich, four dollars up, delivers three actual meats. Order that or order the grilled cheese honestly.
Lumberjack Slam®
Skip it4,110mg of sodium. That is 179% of a full day's recommended limit in one plate, and the single worst number this site has published. The upcharge over the Original Grand Slam buys you a slice of ham that diners describe in language we won't reprint. The extra meat stops tasting like anything about six bites in. There is no version of this that is worth it.
Loaded Veggie Omelette
Skip itThe trap is that it reads healthy. Spinach, mushrooms, zucchini, tomatoes, Swiss — and 920 calories, double what the Fit Slam costs you. Watery is the word that comes up over and over in reviews, which is what happens when you fold that much raw vegetable into eggs on a flat-top. If you want vegetables at Denny's, the Fit Slam already solved this at 450 calories.
Zesty Nachos
Skip itOne appetizer, 1,660 calories and 3,370mg of sodium. That's more than the Lumberjack Slam in calories and it arrives before your food does. The half order exists at $6.49–$7.99 and 870 calories, which is the only defensible way to order this. Better idea: the Classic Sampler splits four things across a table instead of burying one pile in queso.
Frequently askedFAQ
What is the best thing to order at Denny's?
The Slamburger, at $9.99–$12.99. It's the item that testers consistently rank first, and the egg and hash browns inside the bun do more for it than any sauce would. If you're there for breakfast proper, Build Your Own Grand Slam at $6.99–$8.99 feeds you for less than anything else here, and Country-Fried Steak & Eggs is the one to get when you want gravy involved.
Why is Denny's food so high in sodium?
Because almost everything on the plate is a preserved or pre-portioned component — deli ham, sausage links, canned gravy bases, and pancake batter that carries 1,390mg per two-stack on its own. Combo plates stack four or five of those together, which is how the Lumberjack Slam reaches 4,110mg and a bowl of chicken noodle soup reaches 3,880mg. The Fit Slam at 860mg shows it isn't inevitable, just default.
Are Denny's hash browns fresh?
No. By the account of a former Denny's general manager, they arrive dehydrated in cartons and are rehydrated for several hours before cooking. That said, they're not the problem on your plate — they crisp up reasonably and land better than the seasoned red-skin potatoes, which testers repeatedly describe as under-seasoned and soft. The fries are the side to actually avoid.
