What to Order at Jersey Mike's: Every Sub, Judged
Jersey Mike's earned its reputation on one procedural decision: the meat gets sliced when you order it, on a machine behind the counter, instead of arriving in a bag pre-shaved. You can hear it happening. That single difference is why an $11 sub here tastes noticeably better than an $11 sub at most of its competitors, and it's also why the line moves slowly at noon.
The menu is numbered, which hides how differently the numbers perform. Some subs are stacked with four cured meats and some are turkey. Prices below are national averages — Jersey Mike's is heavily franchised and a store in Manhattan or an airport terminal will run $2 to $3 over every figure here. Calories come from Jersey Mike's own published nutrition data, for a Regular made Mike's Way, which is how the chain reports it and how nearly everyone orders.
One structural note before the verdicts: the sodium on this menu is brutal even by fast-food standards. A Regular Original Italian carries about 2,495 mg, which is a full day's worth in one sandwich. It's the cured meat and it isn't fixable by holding the salt.
Every item, judgedThe verdicts
#13 The Original Italian
Order itProvolone, ham, prosciuttini, cappacuolo, salami and pepperoni, all cut in front of you. Six meats is the highest count on the menu and it's why nearly every published ranking of this chain puts the #13 in the top three. The pepperoni is doing the loudest work; the prosciuttini is doing the interesting work. Just know what 2,495 mg of sodium feels like around 3 p.m.
#2 Jersey Shore's Favorite
Order itStrip the #13 down to its three best components, provolone and ham and cappacuolo, and this is what's left: $1.24 less and 130 fewer calories. Cappacuolo is what separates it from the #6 or the #7. It brings pepper and fat that plain deli ham can't.
#55 Big Kahuna Cheese Steak
Order itSteak, grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms, jalapeños and provolone, griddled to order. Multiple ranking sites hand this the top hot-sub slot and the jalapeños are the reason. Take them off and you've paid $1.14 extra for a #17. Fourteen dollars is the most you'll spend on a Regular here. It's also the only hot sub that arrives at the table still hot in the middle.
#17 Mike's Famous Philly
Order itNot a Philadelphia cheesesteak, and it doesn't pretend to be. Thin steak with onions, peppers, mushrooms and white American, and the safest hot order on the menu. 710 calories makes it the leanest thing here that isn't turkey. The white American melts properly, which provolone on the #55 sometimes doesn't.
#7 Turkey and Provolone
Order itThe single most-ordered sub in the chain, and it earns it on execution rather than ambition. Turkey sliced to order has a texture that pre-shaved turkey simply doesn't — less rubber, more meat. Ten dollars, and it's the cheapest sub here you'd order twice. If you want it lighter, the Natural Turkey version runs 690 calories and roughly half the sodium.
#5 Super Sub
DecentIt's the #13 minus the prosciuttini, for forty cents more.
#8 Club Sub
DecentThe bacon is good here, and the mayo is what pushes ham, turkey and bacon to 1,120 calories, the heaviest Regular cold sub on this page. Worth it if bacon is the point. Ask for Mike's Way and half mayo and you'll shave a couple hundred calories without losing what you came for.
Bacon Ranch Chicken Cheese Steak
DecentCustomer threads rate this the chicken item to get, and they're right about the chicken. It's still 160 calories heavier than the #55 for a less interesting sandwich, and ranch on a griddled sub goes slick fast. Eat it there, not at your desk forty minutes later.
#7 Turkey Bowl
DecentThe same turkey and provolone in a bowl with lettuce, tomato, onion, oil and vinegar. 380 calories against 780 for the sub, which is the clearest before-and-after on this menu of what a Jersey Mike's roll actually costs you. At $9.54 it undercuts every sub here except the kids' mini. Fine. You will think about bread.
Chipotle Cheese Steak
Skip itSteak and chipotle mayo, 980 calories, and $13.32. That's 220 more calories and nineteen cents more than the #55, and what you get for it is mayonnaise. The chipotle reads as sweet rather than smoky against the griddled beef. Order the #55 and ask for chipotle mayo on the side if you must.
The Veggie
Skip itDouble provolone, Swiss and American with lettuce, tomato and onion. Nine hundred and twenty calories of cheese sandwich, which is more than the #7, the #2 and the #17. If a lighter order was the goal, this is the worst possible route to it, since the Turkey Bowl is 380. If the goal was vegetarian, the Grilled Portabella Mushroom and Swiss at 610 is the better sub.
Tuna Fish
Skip itThe chain's weakest item and the one reviewers single out by name — one described it as closer to a seafood paste past its prime. 1,020 calories a Regular, eighty over the Original Italian, because tuna salad is mostly mayonnaise. Nothing at a slice-to-order counter should come pre-mixed from a tub, and this does.
Frequently askedFAQ
What is the best sub at Jersey Mike's?
The #13 Original Italian, $11.79 and 940 calories. Six cured meats sliced to order and the sub most rankings and regulars put first. If you want the same idea cheaper, the #2 Jersey Shore's Favorite is $10.55 for provolone, ham and cappacuolo, the three components doing most of the work in the #13. On the hot side it's the #55 Big Kahuna Cheese Steak, and the jalapeños are the whole reason.
What does Mike's Way mean and should I get it?
Mike's Way is onions, lettuce, tomatoes, oil, red wine vinegar, oregano and salt, added at no charge. Get it. The vinegar and oregano are the house seasoning, and cured meat on bread without acid tastes flat. The chain's published calorie figures already assume it, so ordering it changes your total by almost nothing. If you want it less wet, ask for light oil rather than skipping the whole thing.
Is a Giant sub at Jersey Mike's better value than a Regular?
Only if you'll eat all of it in one sitting, which most people won't. A Giant starts around $19.99 against roughly $10 to $14 for a Regular, so the per-inch math is slightly better, but a Giant Original Italian is about 1,780 calories and Jersey Mike's subs reheat badly: the roll goes leathery and the oil-and-vinegar dressing soaks straight through overnight. Two Regulars on two days beats half a Giant twice. The Mini, at roughly 560 calories for the same #13, is the underrated size.
